Student Policies

The ECE Department expects students to abide by the ECE Academic Honesty Policy, the PSU Student Code of Conduct and the PSU Bulletin.

Safe Learning Environment Policy

We expect a culture of professionalism and mutual respect in our department.  Disrespectful comments or behavior, harassment or discrimination based on gender, race, sexual orientation, age, disability or any other protected class will not be tolerated.  Any student or employee who feels that they have been harassed or discriminated against by another student may report that student to the Dean of Student Life office.  Any student who feels that they have been harassed or discriminated against by a member of the faculty, staff or a teaching assistant may report the incident to the Office of Equity and Compliance. PSU’s Student Code of Conduct makes it clear that violence and harassment based on sex and gender are strictly prohibited and offenses are subject to the full realm of sanctions, up to and including suspension and expulsion.

Students are also encouraged to talk to their professor, department adviser, or the department chair about their concerns.  Please note that faculty, including teaching assistants, have the responsibility to report any instances of sex/gender discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual assaults and/or other forms of interpersonal violence.  If you would rather share information with a confidential employee who does not have this reporting responsibility, you can contact an Interpersonal Violence (IPV) Advocate at 503-725-5672. Students can also find information at the Sexual and Relationship Violence Response Program's website.

Academic Honesty

When an instructor is notified or discovers an incident of academic dishonesty that occurred within one of their courses, the instructor decides whether there is sufficient evidence to take action. If there is, the instructor files a complaint with the university for a violation of the student code of conduct (SCC) and sends a copy to the department chair. The chair then places a copy in the student’s departmental file.

The complaint will be handled through the existing university processes. The department and student will be notified of any action the university decides to take. If the university finds that the student has violated the SCC, the department counts this as a first strike against the student. The strike is counted even if the SCC violation occurred in a class taken from another department on campus. If the university finds that there has not been a violation of the SCC, this will be attached to the original complaint and no strike is counted against the student.

If a student receives a second strike and the student is admitted to one of our programs, the student will be automatically suspended from their program. There are no departmental-level appeals and the decision from the university is final. Suspension prevents undergraduate students from taking 3xx or 4xx level courses for one year and graduate students from taking any courses for one year. After one year, the student may apply for readmission. If readmitted and the student receives a third strike, they are permanently expelled from the program.

Our admission criteria include an adherence to the university student code of conduct. At the time of admission to a program, the student may not have had any violations for at least one year and no more than two violations total. Transfer students will normally be expected to provide a disciplinary record from their institution. Any incidents of academic dishonesty are grounds for denial of admission.
