Medical Emergency

Potentially Life-Threatening or Serious Medical Issues

A medical emergency may occur for many reasons. Examples of an emergency medical situations include but are not limited to: chest pain, difficulty breathing, major injury (broken bones, bleeding, etc), unconsciousness / unresponsiveness, seizures, etc.

  • Call 911 immediately for Emergency Medical Service
    • You can also text to 911, contact the Campus Public Safety Office (503-725-5911), or activate one of the blue light emergency phones on campus
  • Report the location, nature of injury or illness, current condition of the injured person, and any other requested information
  • If possible, and you are comfortable doing so, perform first aid
    • Only use CPR or an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) if you feel comfortable and have been trained to do so
  • Wait with the injured person until emergency responders have arrived
  • Do not move the injured person unless they are in immediate danger
  • Send someone to meet emergency responders when they arrive

    • Contact or visit your healthcare provider for additional information and / or medical advice

  • Students
    • Visit the Center for Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) or your external healthcare provider for additional information and / or medical advice
    • Any SHAC-eligible student can access SHAC services regardless of their health insurance coverage

After the Emergency

    • Report the incident to your supervisor and / or Human Resources
    • If necessary, work with Human Resources on any needed workplace accommodations
