ABOUT OUR NAME

We are called The Harold Schnitzer Family Program in Judaic Studies, and we bear that name proudly. The Schnitzer name symbolizes a family's firm and ongoing commitment to our program, as well as to Portland State University, greater Portland and the region at large. We engage students of all backgrounds through a rich and flexible curriculum. With the support of the Harold Schnitzer family, our program has experienced tremendous growth, both in our student population and that of our donors.

COMMUNITY CONNECTION

The motto of Portland State University is "Let Knowledge Serve the City." This reflects a university mission of urban and community engagement, which we practice in the Judaic Studies program through a range of community partnerships and hands-on learning opportunities for students.

For example, students pursuing a degree in Judaic Studies at PSU may apply for the Sara Glasgow Cogan Scholarship, which provides support for students undertaking credit-bearing internships at Jewish community and cultural organizations, such as the Oregon Jewish Museum. Learn about the work these scholarship recipients have accomplished and the positive impact of the internship on the students lives.

Thanks to our donors we are able to offer a range of scholarships to assist eligible students who choose the Judaic Studies major or minor to achieve their dreams.

EVENTS

With the generous support of donors within the community, we host three annual major events to serve the broader community: The Solomon Memorial Lecture, The Levy Event and the Lokey Program. Learn about these events, the people who make them possible, and the benefits to the community through the links below.

In partnership with local Jewish community organizations our program co-sponsors an array of additional events throughout the academic year. We are proud to support our student organized events and clubs and we host departmental open houses and casual get togethers in our Student Commons space located within the Judaic Studies office suite.
