  1. Tina Burdsall, sociology and University Honors, was awarded the Honors College Advisory Award for 2020-21. Nominations are from students and decisions are made by the Honors Council, which is made up of faculty across the university.
  2. Shelly Chabon, academic personnel and leadership development vice provost and speech and hearing sciences faculty member, received the Honors of the Association from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. The Honors is the highest award given by ASHA and is public recognition of her distinguished and clearly exceptional contributions to the field of speech, language and hearing over the course of her career.
  3. Berrin Erdogan, business faculty, was moderator for the panel “Reimagining Work after COVID” at the annual meeting of Association for Psychological Sciences (APS) on May 26.
  4. Cynthia Carmina Gómez, Cultural Resource Centers executive director, served as an editor and publisher for the first issue of the literary journal, Kithe. The first issue features Janice Lee, English faculty, and Ryan Petteway, OHSU-PSU School of Public Health faculty. Fellow editorial board members include editor-in-chief Lauren Hobson MFA ’19 and editors Katie Borak MFA ’19, Karleigh Frisbie Brogan ’14 MFA ’19, Joshua James Amberson MFA ’18, and Mike Schepps MFA ’19.
  5. Shirley A. Jackson, sociology faculty, was interviewed to discuss the summer 2020 protests in Portland on CNN’s United Shades of America in an episode titled “The Power of Protest” on May 16.
  6. Jane Kelly, chemistry faculty, has been selected to serve as a member of the National Institutes of Health’s Drug Discovery and Mechanisms of Antimicrobial Resistance Study Section, which reviews grant applications submitted to the NIH. Members are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline.
  7. Maura Kelly, sociology faculty, won the 2021 John Elliot Allen Outstanding Teaching Award.
  8. Arash Khosravifar and Diane Moug, civil and environmental engineering, were recently recognized with the 2021 Award in Excellence by the Western States Seismic Policy Council for research on mitigating soil liquefaction during seismic events. Read more.
  9. Susan Kirtley, English faculty, was featured on the New Books Network speaking about her book, “Typical Girls: The Rhetoric of Womanhood in Comic Books,” published by Ohio State University Press.
  10. Paul Loikith, geography faculty, was featured in the article “Is the Heat Dome a Freak Occurrence, or the Coldest Summer of the Rest of Our Lives?” by Willamette Week on June 28.

  12. Paul Loikith, geography faculty, was featured in the article “Smoke From Oregon Wildfires is Reaching the East Coast of the U.S.” by Willamette Week on July 21, 2021.
  13. Pronoy Rai, international and global studies faculty, has been elected to serve a two-year term as a director on the board of the American Association of Geographers’ Development Geographies Specialty Group.
  14. Aaron Roussell, sociology faculty, did a podcast interview on his co-authored book, “The Limits of Community Policing: Civilian Power and Police Accountability in Black and Brown Los Angeles,” on Forthe.org, with co-author Luis Daniel Gascón and co-hosts Joe Brizzolara, and Kevin Flores.
  15. Ken Ruoff, history faculty and Japanese Studies director, was interviewed for a story from CTV on an apparent deliberate leak by one of the Japan Emperor Naruhito’s top advisers that Naruhito is “extremely worried” that holding the Olympics could hasten the spread of COVID-19 in Japan.
  16. Ken Ruoff, history faculty and Japanese Studies director, was interviewed to discuss “Why is the Vaccination Rate in Japan so Low?” for KGW’s The Story.
  17. Crista Tappan, business, was featured in the story “Trail Running Has a Harassment Problem. These Women Are Here to Stop It” by Runner’s World for her work on Runners Equity Alliance (REA) focused on building a safer, more equitable running space. REA has been conducting research and designing education initiatives to ensure that everyone can run without harassment.
  18. Hyeyoung Woo, sociology faculty, received the Portland State University President’s Diversity Award for outstanding accomplishments in making PSU a more diverse, inclusive and equitable university.
