Student Hospitalization or Medical Emergencies

When a student experiences an emergency they can often become concerned about academics and completing their term.  It is our hope that you focus on you rhealth and wellbeing- and we are happy to help you do so.  Contact the Dean of Student Life Office (503-725-5341) so we can help you.

Some of the emergencies that can fall under this category include:

  • Student hospitalization or medical emergency
  • Assault or interpersonal iiolence
  • Death of a family member
  • Medical emergency within the family

There are three main steps when experiencing an emergency.  Fortunately, with proper medical or legal documentation these can be completed within a year after the emergency occurs. They are:

1.  Withdraw from the class.  Based on the timeline in which you are able to produce documentation and communicate with our office this may include an immediate Medical Withdrawal, a Deadline Appeals Petition, or Scholastic Standards Petition.  We can help you complete and turn in these forms.  You will receive a W on your transcript (which has no impact on GPA).  This may result in a low completion rate, in which case you may need to fill out a Satisfactory Academic Progress petition for future financial aid.  We are happy to help you with this form and process.

2.  Change your grade to a Pass/No Pass grade.  In this case you will have to do the work to pass (receive a C or better) in your course.  Based on the timeline in which you are able to produce documentation and communicate with our office this may include an immediate Medical Withdrawal, a Deadline Appeals Petition, or Scholastic Standards Petition.  We can help you complete and turn in these forms. A grade of "P" is not included when calculating G.P.A.  This wont work for some required courses, so its best to check in with an adviser about this before you confirm you would like me to request your grades changed.

3.  Discuss the possibility of Incomplete grades with your instructor.  This gives you additional time to complete assignments or in some case allows you to retake the course next term without registering and paying for it.  You must be passing the class in order to utilize this option.  Please use this form to outline the required assignments you must make up for a final grade.  All course requirements must be completed within a year or your I grade will become an F.  We can help you talk through these options.  This may result in a low completion rate, in which case you may need to fill out a Satisfactory Academic Progress petition for future financial aid.  We are happy to help you with this form and process.

When surviving an emergency it can be especially important to utilize support resources.  Student Health and Counseling offers free walk-in counseling appointments for students experiencing crisis.  The staff there can also act as a liason to the hospital when a student is being treated.  Student Health and Counseling also has staff on hand to help you understand your student insurance plan as it relates to off campus providers' services.

It may be appropriate to consider services at the Disability Resource Center after experiencing an emergency.  Our office can help you get aquainted with the DRC and fill out forms to apply for services with their office.
