Chemistry Stockroom Services

Lab Coats

Lab Coats can be acquired from the stockroom. A supply of clean white and blue (flame retardant) lab coats is maintained. Whenever you wish to get a new coat fill out the stockroom order form and the stockroom staff will arrange a time for you to bring your old one to the stockroom and pick up a clean one.

White lab coats are offered free of charge and blue lab coats have a rental fee of $0.187 per day. This fee is billed monthly to an index you provide.

Cryogenics and Dry Solvents

The stockroom maintains a supply of Liquid Nitrogen and Dry Ice which is available to purchase by the pound.

The following solvents are also available as dry from our MBraun solvent still. These are Aldrich Pure-Pac grade—anhydrous and 99.999+% purity.

  • Methanol
  • Tetrahydrofuran
  • Dichloromethane
  • Acetonitrile
  • Dimethylformamide

Liquid Nitrogen, Dry Ice, and the solvent still are all self-service once you have completed training. Please email the stockroom (chemstrm@pdx.edu) to schedule a training time with stockroom staff.

Balance and Pipetter Calibrations

Once a year the stockroom arranges for on-site calibrations of balances and pipettors (announcements will be sent to department listserves). Bulk pricing allows us to offer these programs at an affordable price, typically around $20 a pipettor or $55 a balance.

During the period this service is offered the stockroom will send out an email invite. Labs will drop off of your pipettors or balances in one of our shared spaces and once calibrated pick up will be arranged.

In addition, during the pandemic, our teaching lab spaces are available for research use to accommodate social distancing needs. You can gain access to these by emailing the stockroom with your request. Please use the subject "Shared Space Request: (the space you wish to use)", thank you.

Spaces available for scheduled usage at this time:

  • Room 355 (FTIR, melting point, and Rotovap)
  • Room 361 (FTIR, melting point, and Rotovap)
  • Room 261 (FTIR and Polarimeter) Fume hoods are available for sample prep. Glass lab is open during stockroom hours only)
  • Room 269 (Centrifuge. Please inquire with Drs Clare or Goforth for use of the centrifuge if you have not been trained)
  • B2-63 (High-Performance Liquid Chromatograph, Fluorometer, Gas Chromatograph, and Atomic Absorption Spectrometer)

Pipet Tip Box Recycling Program

In partnership with PSU's Planning & Sustainability Office the Department of Chemistry offers free collection and recycling of pipette tip boxes. These plastic boxes are ground, melted, and extruded to make pellets that can be used in items made from recycled plastics. Email the stockroom (chemstrm@pdx.edu) to schedule a drop-off time.
