Elani Cabrera Vega

Ph.D. Candidate in Chemistry

Hello! My name is Elani (she/her), and I am an international student from Mexico and a first-generation Ph.D. student at Portland State University in the Lasseter Clare group. I have a bachelor's degree in Biopharmaceutical Chemistry from Universidad Veracruzana in Mexico and a Master's Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences with honors from Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana, Mexico City. I received the Dean's Oregon Sports Lottery Graduate Scholarship in 2022. My research interests involve the development of biomaterials or materials that can prevent the deterioration caused by corrosion and biological agents in metallic outdoor sculptures. In my free time, I enjoy embroidery, Bible journaling, and having long walks outdoors.

Kieran Gallagher

Ph.D Candidate in Chemistry

Kieran Gallagher is a Chemistry Ph.D. student at Portland State in the Lasseter Clare Group. He received a bachelor's degree in chemistry and art from Whitman College. Kieran is interested in exploring the degradation of art and artifacts, through traditional analytical techniques and our lab's new CT Scanner. Outside of the lab Kieran enjoys biking, sewing and exploring the nature surrounding Portland.

Please contact Dr. Lasseter Clare (claret@pdx.edu) with inquiries regarding openings in the lab.

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS

Interested students should apply to the graduate program through the Portland State Chemistry Department. Some of the thesis topics currently available are:

  • Developing diagnostics for protective coating degradation and failure
  • Developing nanocomposite materials for use in art conservation
  • Understanding barrier properties of thin films using electrical circuit models
  • Understanding material breakdown by corrosion layer analysis

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCES

Numerous projects are available for students, as research experiences in materials chemistry and internships in art conservation.
We also host undergraduate students through the REU program
