Student Language Proficiency Requirement Document Review Request
This form is to be completed by students as the first step to have the documents listed below reviewed to fulfill a language requirement. Once we receive your review request form and all required supplemental documentation, we will email you the next steps. This email will come from world@pdx.edu

 Portland State University has two different second language requirements:
  1. Second Language Admission Requirement: All students who graduated from an Oregon high school in 1997 or later must demonstrate proficiency in a second language that is normally attained after two years of high school study to be admitted to Portland State.
     
  2. Second Language B.A./M.A. Requirement: All students who are completing a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Master of Arts (M.A.) degree must demonstrate proficiency in a second language that is normally attained after two years of college study to graduate from Portland State. 
OPTIONS TO MEET THE SECOND LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
  1. College Credit
    Submit this form if you have already completed language coursework equivalent to the 102-level (for BS students) or 203-level (for B.A./M.A. students)
  2. Oregon Seal of Biliteracy (SoBL)
    Submit this form if you have received the SoBL as a student at a secondary or post-secondary educational institution in the State of Oregon. 
  3. Completed a Proficiency-Based Assessment
    Submit this form if you have already completed an approved proficiency-based assessment exam.
    PSU accepts various scores for the following exams:
    •  American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL)
    •  Advanced Placement (AP) • ALTA Writing Exam
    •  Brigham Young University Foreign Language Achievement Testing Services (BYU FLATS)
    •  College Level Exam Program (CLEP)
    •  Goethe-Institut Exam
    •  International Baccalaureate (IB)
    •  SAT Foreign Language Subject Test
    •  Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency (STAMP)
  4. Native Speakers
    Submit this form if you completed your formal education in a language other than English (through 7th grade for BS students or through high school for B.A./M.A. students) AND can provide proof from their home country (such as an official diploma or transcript). If you completed your education in a language other than English, but you cannot provide proof from your home country (such as an official diploma or transcript), you will need to take an approved proficiency exam. Have your academic advisor complete the Advisor Language Proficiency Exam Referral form
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT TEST SCORES:
  • Not all exam scores are accepted for all languages.
  • Not all exam scores are accepted to fulfill both language requirements.

  • Undergraduate students who fulfill their language requirement via a non-credit proficiency-based assessment exam must earn 4 additional credits in arts & letters in order to earn the 28 total credits required.
