Sergei Sychov is Instructor of Russian in the Department of World Languages and Literatures’ Russian Flagship program, where he teaches introductory and advanced Russian language courses. Before coming to Portland State, he taught Russian language, literature, and film at Reed College, Lewis and Clark College, Defense Language Institute, and the University of Michigan.

Sergei’s research interests include Russian and Ukrainian language, literature, cinema, and culture of the 20th and 21st century, especially essayism and poetry. His current research project explores various modes of writing (more specifically, ‘essaying’ and blogging) that contemporary Russian authors and other private citizens use to respond to the government’s expanding monopoly on public communication. His other research endeavor considers approaches to language teaching informed by the Total Physical Response (TPR) method and improvisational theater techniques.
