WOKE Week: Get That Job: How to Interview with Confidence

WOKE Week is pleased to welcome Shelli Romero, MPA, OPMCP, president at Rose City Chica, to Portland State. She will lead a career coaching workshop that provides participants with practical, useful and interactive tools to be successful in the job interview process. She will present tips and information that serve as the foundation for success, including:

  • Identifying and attaining transferable skills
  • The art of job interview language
  • Typical questions asked and how to best respond to them

Attendees will engage in role-playing of mock interview sessions to help practice interview skills and instill confidence as they embark on their career journey. Shelli will provide sufficient time for questions. The location will be announced soon.

About Shelli Romero

Shelli Romero

In 2012, Shelli Romero initiated Rose City Chica, LLC. Rose City Chica, LLC is a career coaching firm with a commitment and focus to helping people maximize their potential. Shelli Romero’s work as President of Rose City Chica, LLC is to provide career coaching, development and exploration services to
clients. She intentionally focuses on working with clients who are women, people of color and GLBTQ, but she welcomes the chance to work with all people. A natural coach, mentor, motivator with skills in strategic positioning, Shelli has used these abilities in both her professional and personal capacities over
the years which led her to found Rose City Chica over seven years ago. The services she provides include resume reboots, interview preparation, brainstorming transferable skills, reviews of application materials, career exploration, positioning for a job promotion, salary/job negotiation, crucial conversations with supervisors and co-workers, confidence building and strategies and approaches to better defining career
goals and direction.

Besides her work with Rose City Chica, Shelli works full time as the Area Manager Central with the State of Oregon Department of Transportation in Portland. Shelli’s work combines public policy/ public administration; government/community relations; strategic communications and project/ program management relative to land use, transportation and economic development for ODOT Region 1. She has also held the positions of Government liaison, Public Policy & Community Affairs Manager and Interim Area Manager West within ODOT. She has worked at Multnomah County, the City of Portland, state and federal governments, served on the staff of three elected officials and worked for two non-profit
organizations.

Shelli is a graduate of a statewide and national leadership programs. She graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Speech: Rhetoric and Communication and holds a Masters degree in Public Administration from Portland State University’s Hatfield School of Government. She holds Certificates from the Oregon Project Management Certification Program at Willamette University’s Atkinson Graduate School of Business, the Harvard Kennedy School of Government Leadership Development Program in Public Policy and the Center for Creative Leadership’s Leadership Development Program.

In 2005, Shelli was knighted as an Honorary Dame of the Royal Rosarians for her high ethics, integrity and contributions to the community, and was named the 2018 Women Transportation Seminar, Portland Chapter Woman of the Year. Shelli was raised by educator-activist parents in rural, suburban and urban Oregon on the picket line advocating for farmworkers rights as a girl. She has resided in the Portland neighborhood of Foster-Powell for 24 years.
