The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is pleased to announce Jess Brown's MS Thesis Defense: "Assessment of Similarity in Chemically Complex Samples."

Date: Thursday, July 10, 2014
Time: 11:00am
Location: Engineering Building 202L (CEE Conference Room)
Adviser: Dr. James Pankow

This work compares the complex flavor profiles of flavored tobacco and candy/Kool-Aid in order to determine if “candy-flavored tobacco” is a valid designation. The difficulty of recognizing similarities and differences in samples increases with chemical complexity; it is a common problem encountered in environmental samples. The second part of this work therefore employed hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) to facilitate pattern recognition in data generated from air sample measurements taken in the Missouri Ozarks region. HCA provided the opportunity to assess meteorological impacts on the chemistry of secondary organic aerosol precursors.
