Admission Requirement

Options for Meeting the Second Language Admission Requirement

If you have met the Admission Requirement in any of the following ways, please bring a copy of your transcript or other documentation to the Department of World Languages and Literatures, 491 Neuberger Hall.  The office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

High School and College Options

1.  Two years of the same high school-level second language, with a grade of C- or better

2.  C- or higher in the third year of high school-level second language

3.  Two quarters or semesters of the same college-level second  language with a grade of D- or better

Proficiency-Based Assessment Options

1.  Education satisfactorily completed through at least 7th grade in school or country where English was not the language of instruction.

2.  Score of 40 or higher: CLEP Foreign Language Exam

3.  Score of 500 or higher: SAT Foreign Language Subject Test

4.  Score of 2 or higher: Advanced Placement Foreign Language Test

5.  Score of 4 or higher: International Baccalaureate Standard Level Foreign Language Exam

6.  Satisfactory performance (P): Brigham Young Foreign Language Assessment (BYU FLATS)

7.  Satisfactory performance: college second-language departmental challenge exam
8.  Score of novice-high or higher: Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency (STAMP)

9. Score of novice-high or higher: ACTFL scale in American Sign Language (ASL)

10.  Score of novice-high or higher: ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview
