International/China Seminar: Religious Freedom & Academic Freedom in China and Implications for PSU

Abstract:

With global interaction and collaboration on research and exchanges of scholars between China and the United States, what happens in China can affect us in the United States. In this seminar, Dr. Xiao will talk about her observations and studies on religious freedom and academic freedom in China, and discuss their implications for PSU. Come and learn how cultural and scholarly exchanges with China can affect you.

About the speaker:

Dr. Yu Xiao is an Associate Professor in Urban Studies and Planning at Portland State University. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Peking University in China and her master’s and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After working for Texas A&M University for nine years, she joined PSU about one year ago. She has written several academic papers on China, served on the Board of Directors of the International Association for China Planning, and conducted extensive field research in China through funding support from the U.S. National Science Foundation.
