Diversity at TSUSP

The Nohad A. Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning promotes equity and fosters an environment of cultural difference and diversity among faculty and students. These principles are fundamental to developing healthy communities and achieving academic excellence. TSUSP demonstrates commitment to diversity and equity in our school in the following ways:

Our emphasis on diversity and equity at TSUSP is grounded in and supported by work at the university and college (CUPA) levels, including:

University-wide. Diversity, equity, and inclusion is not only a value and a mission of Portland State University, it is the essential framework of who we are and what we do as an institution and community. See more below:

  • PSU Diversity Action Plan, published in 2012 and with a 2014 update
  • PSU Strategic Plan: 2016 - 2020, Let Knowledge Serve The City. Goal 4 of this 5 goal strategic plan requires us to "expand our commitment to equity".   • Global Diversity and Inclusion is the central division that leads and facilitates the continuous quest for Inclusive Excellence. 
  • The Diversity Action Council (DAC) is comprised of PSU faculty, staff, and students. The DAC's role is to foster equity and social justice by reviewing PSU programs, policies, and decision making and developing recommendations that aid the university in our work to embed systemic and structural changes utilizing the equity lens and to serve the best interests of our diverse constituents.   • Equity & Compliance
    • Investigates complaints of prohibited discrimination and harassment.
    • Ensures compliance with federal and state affirmative action and equal opportunity laws and regulations.
    • Ensures compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and its amendments, as well as Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act.
    • Oversees Title IX compliance.

  • The College of Urban and Public Affairs & Joint School of Public Health hosts a Joint Equity & Diversity Initiative (JEDI).
