We offer a selection of monthly workshops to help you choose a major or career, answer questions about internships, prepare you for interviewing, perfect your resume and cover letter, and more.

We also co-host and promote other career-related campus events. Please see the calendar below for details and dates. Note that all workshops and events are located in our office, unless otherwise stated. 

Workshops are held in the University Career Center, suite 342 Fariborz Maseeh Hall or conducted remotely via Zoom. Details are in the calendar events below.

Workshop Descriptions

Job Search 101:

With 60% of jobs unadvertised, it's difficult to get a job by just looking online and sending out resumes. The Job Search Strategies workshop will introduce first-time job-seekers to effective approaches and job search resources to land a job in a competitive market.

Networking for Introverts:

Are you intimidated by the idea of networking? Come learn the basics of how to network in this interactive session. We will discuss informational interviewing, Linkedin, and how to connect to professional organizations to meet people in your chosen field. 

Introduction to Interviewing:

Come learn the basics of interviewing and strategies to develop and improve your interview skills. We will discuss how to prepare for an interview, what employers expect, and how to handle the most common interview questions.

Writing Resumes & Cover Letters:

Get the latest information on how to effectively write and format job search documents, such as what information to include, how to create a targeted resume, and how to illustrate "fit" with a position.

Internships: Overview and Search Tips:

This discussion-based workshop covers topics such as the benefits of doing an internship, search tips, informational interviewing, networking, how to create your own internship, etc. Q&A time is available.

Major & Career Exploration:

Career & Major Exploration Workshop Series [3-Part Series]:

Are you trying to explore your career options, choose your major or learn more about different careers? This workshop uses career assessments to help students explore careers and majors. Come to this workshop to learn about your personality type, gain a better understanding of how personality type influences your career and major decision, identify your interests, skills, and values, and uncover some potential careers. Students will receive their personality type profile and have an opportunity to ask questions and seek clarification. (You must attend all 3 sessions and will take the Myers-Brigg Type Indicator). A $20 materials fee is called for at the first session. For current PSU students and alumni only.  NOTE: This workshop is currently suspended, but PSU students and alumni may meet with a career counselor for help exploring majors and careers.

Graduate School:

Applying for Graduate School:

Do you think you might want to go to graduate school? Not sure what all is involved or how to get started? Come to this workshop to help answer these questions and more. Topics covered will include: how to assess if graduate school is right for you; how to research and identify the program/s for you; the graduate school application process and what you will need to apply; and, how to develop a strong application. 

Personal Statement Session:

Are you lost about how to start your personal statement/statement of purpose/essay for graduate school or scholarships? Feeling frustrated by the writing process? Come to this workshop to hear from the PSU Writing Center expert on how to prepare an outstanding personal statement/statement of purpose/essay for graduate school applications and scholarships.

Students looking for guidance or getting started in internship search, resume/cover letter creation or review, interview preparation, and strategizing for what kinds of internships to look for, please book an appointment with one of the Career Counselors. Workshops Across Campus

Free computer program workshops for students are offered by OIT! The Office of Information Technology offers free technology workshops to PSU faculty, staff, and students. Look below for more information about the available subjects and times. To attend a workshop, just register and go to the designated location at the workshop's day/time.

Free Financial Wellness appointments and workshops are offered by the Financial Wellness Center! Understanding how to manage money is an important part of success as a student. Their mission is to empower all students to make healthy financial decisions through education, awareness and mentoring. 

Career Exploration Class

1-Credit Class

Career Exploration (UNST 195): Career Exploration is a 1-credit career decision-making class. Participants learn about the myths and realities of choosing a major and the career decision-making process; identify their relevant skills, interests, and values; uncover potential careers to explore; and learn how to research specific job titles through print and electronic sources as well as informational interviews. Attendance at all sessions is required; missing the first class session may result in removal from this course. There is a $20 materials fee for the administration of career assessment.

NOTE: After the 1st week of the term, permission is required to add this course. The course can be added until the first class meeting with a signature on a Special Registration Form or email response from the instructor.  You may come in-person to the University Career Center or call (503) 725-4613 for more info. *Always check with Financial Aid or your academic advisor when dropping or adding courses after the university deadline.
