Meet Daniar Listyasari - MIM ‘17

Current City

Portland, Oregon

What’s your story?

I am originally from Jakarta and lived in Texas for almost 12 years. My background is in consumer science, with a focus on social media marketing.

How did you decide to pursue the Master of International Management?

I knew that I wanted to launch a lifestyle brand for fashion and home design, and enter the Asia Pacific region with that venture. That’s why the fact that the MIM gives me a chance to really immerse myself in the business cultures of the Pacific Rim resonated with me.

I also always wanted to learn Japanese, and the Asia field trip sounded really exciting.

What has your experience been with the program so far?

Something I absolutely love about the program is that it connects me with people from all over the world. I love meeting new people and learning about their cultures. I cohort is pretty small, so you actually get to know each other well.

I also appreciate that the faculty bring a lot of knowledge to the classroom and are going way beyond the textbook to teach us why we are learning what’s in the curriculum and how we will be able to apply it. We go through a lot of case studies that specifically relate to doing business on a global scale.

I loved every single class I’ve taken. And I am so excited to be able to tell people that I am studying international management!

How do you like studying and living in Portland?

I like it! There’s so much nature close by, so many beautiful places. And networking seems more casual than in other places, which makes it easier for people who are earlier in their career and newer to the process.

As you look ahead to your graduation next fall, how do you feel the MIM is preparing you for your next steps?

The program has prepared me to work with different people from around the world. I also have an understanding of how all the basic components of business fit together.

And I know what’s possible for me, because I have been meeting alumni at networking events who are doing amazing things. It’s inspiring to think that I might actually be working with them in the future. This really has been a once in a lifetime opportunity for me.
