Grand re-opening of PSU Science Research & Teaching Center, Oct. 21
Portland State University celebrates the grand re-opening of its Science Research & Teaching Center (SRTC, formerly Science Building 2), following a $46.5 million modernization, expansion and upgrade.
The SRTC serves as a vital link in the chain of science education, advanced research, and workforce development for healthcare, advanced manufacturing, biotech and high-tech industries. The upgraded facility will better serve students, faculty, and partners in biology, chemistry, environmental science and other disciplines—including over 4,000 pre-professional health care students taking classes each year.
Originally built in 1970, the SRTC now houses new and remodeled classrooms, study space, laboratories, hazardous waste facilities and more. Renovations include energy efficiency retrofits that will reduce energy costs by 30 percent annually, even as building use increases. The project is on track for a LEED Gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The new and remodeled space will help accommodate the growth of funded research at PSU, as well as the increase in student majoring in science (from fewer than 1,000 to well over 2,100 in the past decade). Featured research labs and classrooms include:
• A new home for the Rae Selling Berry Seed Bank and Plant Conservation Program;
• An expanded Center for Life in Extreme Environments;
• The McDougall Center for Computational Science;
• PGE Foundation Renewable Energy Lab;
• Intel Environmental Science Teaching Lab;
• Osgood and ODS Health Anatomy and Physiology Teaching Labs;
• BioAnalytical Mass Spectrometry Facility;
• James and Shirley Rippey Organic Chemistry Lab;
• Clare Lab for Science of Art Conservation.
Friday, October 21— Official ceremony, 3:30 p.m.; open house and tours, 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Saturday, October 22: Open house and tours, 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
PSU Science Research & Teaching Center Atrium, 1719 S.W. 10th Ave., Portland, Ore.
