PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland State University held a summit Friday discussing how they could make Portland transportation easier to access for travelers who are blind or have low vision.

Attendees said simple things, like increasing the number of audible announcements, could make a huge difference.

"Right now, Portland TriMet buses downtown are fairly good at announcing every stop. But once you get out of downtown, it announces every 10 to 20 blocks and that's extremely disorienting for a person like me," said Prateek Dujari.

Conference speakers say improved technology doesn't automatically make things easier for people with visual impairments. The key, they say, is designing transit with the unique needs of everyone in mind.
