Patrick Terry is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the School of Film. His research background focuses on the cinema, literature and history of East Asia with an emphasis on Japan. He is currently a Ph.D. Candidate in Film & Media Studies at the University of Kansas. He is completing his dissertation project, Success through Failure: Japan’s Domestic Film Industry in the Bubble Age that combines political economic and media industry studies approaches to analyzing the reorganization of Japan’s major film studios from the 1970s to the 1990s. His current research interests focus on transnational cinema flows, East Asian cinemas, and the confluence of art and commerce in film and media. He has presented his work at the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS), Association for Asian Studies (AAS), and the American Comparative Literature Association (ACLA) annual conferences. During 2018-2019, he teaches Japanese Film+Media Survey, Japanese New Wave, and Media Industries in Japan. He holds both an M.A. in East Asian Languages and Literatures and a B.A. from the University of Oregon.
