Surface Scratch is a personal experimental essay film that uses archival photos as the basis for an investigation of the subject of the female self image. The use of 16mm clear, black, and archival film leader will acts as a symbolic and transitional motif to allow reflection about self image as seen through scans of images found in which the subject scratched out her face. Short live action vignettes of women engaged in beautification activities provide the contemporary context for an exploration of how present day women either participate in or resist pressure to conform to social expectations for how women should cultivate their appearance.
