The spaces of our daily life – urban and architectural, designed or spontaneously grown – are the setting for the human subject’s interaction with people and things. Inhabitation is never neutral, for these environments strike us affectively, prompting immediate responses that eventually coagulate into deliberate actions of adaptation and transformation. The soft traces of human presence can be read as they remain inscribed upon the hard infrastructure of architecture: as we work to modify the existing environment, we can extract these traces almost as in an archaeological excavation. Beyond the aesthetics of design, an anthropological inquiry into the lived dimension of human space provides architecture with a deep layer of sense, giving visibility to the subjects’ emotions as they have sedimented on the environment.

Federico De Matteis is an architect and teaches design at the University of L’Aquila, Italy. He has studied in Italy, Germany, and the United States, and taught at several universities in Europe and Asia. He has extensively studied 20th century housing as a field for the transformation of the modern European city; his research today focuses on the anthropological dimension of the built environment, investigating the human subjects’ affective interaction with the city and architecture. De Matteis is the School of Architecture's Distinguished Visiting Professor for Fall 2018.

This event is hosted by PSU's School of Architecture.
