My Soul is a Witness: Spirit and Spirituality in the Songs of America's Enslaved

Lincoln Recital Hall (LH 75)
1620 SW Park Ave

Free and open to the public

Featuring lyric tenor Leroy E. Bynum, Jr., Dean of the College of the Arts, and Music faculty Chuck Dillard, piano. The Negro Spiritual contains in its verses the history of an oppressed people - their hopes and desires, their innermost feelings and deepest longings. In its melodies and rhythms one finds the ancestry of Africa, intertwined with that of white America and Europe. This recital will explore both the spirit and spirituality of America's "slave songs" captured in concert arrangement by several of the 20th century's most celebrated arrangers of spirituals.

A reception for all concert attendees will immediately follow in the Broadway Gallery.
