Michaela Madrid is an enrolled member of the Lower Brule Lakota Sioux Tribe. Originally from South Dakota, Michaela moved to the Pacific Northwest to accept an internship with the U.S. Department of Interior, Indian Affairs - Office of Self Governance Northwest Field office after having interned in their Washington, DC headquarters in 2015. She is currently a graduate student at Portland State University where she is working on a Master’s in Public Policy with a focus on intergovernmental relations with Native American Tribal Governments. Michaela serves as the Program Coordinator for the Institute for Tribal Government and an Energy and Water Policy Associate for the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians Energy Program. Michaela is interested in combining traditional cultural values with modern governance strategies to shape policy that will have a positive impact on the everyday lives of Native Americans on and off the reservation.
