Portland State recognized in national annual sustainability rankings

Written by the Campus Sustainability Office

The 2018 Sustainable Campus Index and Sierra Cool Schools rankings have been released, with Portland State once again being recognized for its sustainable operations, academics, research programs, and more.

Every year Portland State University completes the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System™ (STARS), a program of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). As happens with the hundreds of other higher education institutions that complete this assessment, the information submitted is used by STARS and other programs to provide PSU with a rating or ranking. The priority or weight of the scoring categories differ by ranking system, for example, Sierra Cool Schools has a weighting and focus on energy, air and climate, and transportation.

For 2018, PSU has received the following recognition:

The AASHE Sustainable Campus Index also highlighted PSU in the purchasing category for work with Miller Paint during the construction of the Viking Pavilion. This effort, which led to PSU receiving the 2018 Business Case Leadership Award from the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council, focused on ensuring the use of ultra-low VOC paint and LEED v4 compliance in the building. Through this effort, Miller Paint developed product lines with Health Product Declarations, ensuring transparency and promoting building occupant health.

PSU has also been included as a Green College by Princeton Review and anticipates receiving this nod again when the 2018 list is released in October.
