Meet Bree Kalima
Aloha mai kākou! My name is Bree Kalima (she/her/hers) and I am an indigenous pacific womxn, scholar-practitioner, ally, storyteller, and femtor. I was born and raised on the island of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi and identify ethnically as Kanaka Maoli, Japanese, Chinese, English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh. I am honored to be the Pacific Islander, Asian, and Asian American (PIAAA) Student Center Program Coordinator at PSU.
Prior to coming to PSU, I pursued my undergraduate education as a first-gen student at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo (UHH) where I studied Psychology, Administrtaion of Justice, and Hawaiian Studies. During my time at UHH, I served as a student coordinator for First-Year Experience, Academic & Career Advising, Residential Life, Peer Mentoring, and Minority Access & Achievement Programs. I was also part of the coalition that reinstated the Native Hawaiian Student Leadership Conference.
After taking a working gap year upon graduation, I continued my education at San Diego State University (SDSU) where I will soon earn my M.Ed. in Postsecondary Educational Leadership, Specialization in Student Affairs. While at SDSU, I was a graduate assistant for Commuter Life in the office of Student Life & Leadership, a graduate assistant for the Center for Intercultural Relations, and the graduate intern for (AAPI)phany – a student-centered workshop series that explored identity, culture, community, advocacy and coalition building of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Lastly, I am a Community Engagement Coordinator for NASPAʻs Asian Pacific Islander Knowledge Community (API KC).
Outside of my role at PSU, I am a huge foodie and I like to work out, (re)connect to land/culture/community/self, binge watch Netflix/Hulu, and talk story.
