Leah Maldonado, an undergraduate student in the School of Art + Design studying Graphic Design, has been featured on the London-based international design blog It's Nice That. The focus of the article is Maldonado's recent mixed-media installation and corresponding typeface design work she calls GlyphWorld. It’s set in a mythical alternate font-world made up of nine landscapes: Forest, Meadow, Flower, Mountain, Airland, Animal Soul, Glacier, Desert, and Wasteland. The project pushes the boundaries of what a typeface can be by using the medium of letterforms to reflect an emotional connection to our environment.

GlyphWorld is on display in the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at PSU as part of the 2019 Arlene Schnitzer Visual Arts Prize exhibition. Maldonado received the $5000 first-place prize this year. The Schnitzer Prize is the highest award offered in the School of Art + Design. It acknowledges the achievement and promise of our students and is an important expression of our values and our commitment to excellence in higher education and the arts.

See the show now through February 15, 2020.
