Nicolai Kruger is an Adjunct Assistant Professor within the School of Architecture at Portland State University. She is a Portland-native architect and illustrator. She spent 15 years in architectural practices, including Pelli Clarke Pelli Japan and SRG Partnership. She has vast international experience having spent nine years based in Tokyo, Japan where she worked on large-scale projects throughout Asia. Practicing in a context where hyper-modern technology and ancient building traditions can somehow coexist has deeply influenced the way Nicolai approaches the built environment. She advocates for resilience in buildings and communities. This is informed by her first-hand experience going through a 9.1 magnitude earthquake and its aftermath, in Japan in 2011. She has spoken publicly about that event and shared her own lessons-learned that are applicable to practitioners here in the Pacific Northwest. Nicolai recently founded Nicolai Kruger Studio to focus on what she is most passionate about, architectural illustration. Her hand sketches and watercolors evoke the essence of a place and inspire people to see its potential.
