Nancy Smith Mitchell

I'm Nancy Smith Mitchell. I was born and raised in Tempe, Arizona, and I attended the University of Arizona in Tucson. I have a dual B.S. in Microbiology and Molecular and Cellular Biology, which includes a structured Math, Physics, and Chemistry minor. I have worked in the biomedical field in multiple roles in the field of human research and clinical trials. My husband and I moved to Portland last summer with our two dogs, and we're looking forward to the upcoming birth of our baby. It will certainly be challenging to complete the MST program with a newborn, but the support at the CSE has been great and I know I'll be able to do it.

I am seeking an initial endorsement at the high school level to teach Biology and Chemistry, and hope to eventually be endorsed to teach Physics, math, and integrated science. My research interests are in the field of alternative assessment tools in science. I am specifically going to be looking at the use of concept maps as formal assessment tools in the high school science classroom. I wanted to be a part of the Noyce program because of the unique opportunities I have as part of it.

Quote: "You look at science (or at least talk of it) as some sort of demoralizing invention of man, something apart from real life, and which must be cautiously guarded and kept separate from everyday existence. But science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated. Science, for me, gives a partial explanation for life. In so far as it goes, it is based on fact, experience and experiment." ~ Rosalind Franklin
