Leon E. Panetta, former U.S. Secretary of Defense and CIA Director, will be the  keynote speaker for PSU's annual Simon Benson Awards Dinner on Thursday, October 23 at the Oregon Convention Center.

Panetta oversaw the successful U.S. military operation against 9/11 terrorist Osama bin Laden and held a remarkable array of top-level posts throughout his distinguished career of public service—including White House Chief of Staff, Director of the Office of Management and Budget and Chairman of the U.S. House Budget Committee. His depth and range of experiences has given him an unparalleled perspective on national and international events.

Simon Benson Awards for Philanthropy will be presented to prominent Portland philanthropist Earle M. Chiles and science education entrepreneurs Christine and David Vernier. These honorees have given generously to Portland State University and many other organizations throughout our community and have transformed lives through their philanthropy.

The Simon Benson Award for Alumni Achievement will be presented to Ramon S. Torrecilha, PhD, PSU '84, MS '86. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in sociology from PSU before earning a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and embarking on a career as a university professor and administrator in California.

Our presenting sponsor will be Bank of America.
