COVID-19 Temporary Categories:

In response to current circumstances that have altered the way our media groups operate, the following categories are being implemented and may be invoiced. Video add-on rates apply for interviews, as they would for normal journalistic content, upholding such standards and avoiding conflicts of interest.

  • 1-14:59 minutes unedited video conversation recorded by the contributor via Zoom, Hangouts, or similar platform: $10

  • 15-45 minutes unedited video recorded by contributor: via Zoom, Hangouts, or similar platform: $15

Please note:

  1. Contributors are free to work on multiple items with more than one Student Media organization at a time.
  2. Each item may only be invoiced once, even if published in both print and online or otherwise duplicated.
  3. In all categories of contractor work, items that are unnecessarily lengthy or that do not meet established standards may be edited, rejected, or sent back to the contributor for further revision at the editor’s discretion. Pay rates are based on the final version of the item that is published, with the exception of copy edited items, which are paid based on the initial word count.
  4. Vanguard contributors who submit 10 consecutive items by the organization-specified deadline will be eligible for “Preferred Contributor” rates for item 11 and beyond in designated categories of content. Thereafter, if a PC misses a deadline, they will receive a courtesy reminder of expectations. A second missed deadline will result in a return to standard contributor rates, wherein the contributor would again have to submit 10 items by deadline before being eligible for PC rates. Pacific Sentinel contributors who submit 5 consecutive items by the organization-specified deadline will be eligible for “Preferred Contributor” rates for item 6 and beyond in designated categories of content. Thereafter, if a PC misses a deadline, they will receive a courtesy reminder of expectations. A second missed deadline will result in a return to standard contributor rates, wherein the contributor would again have to submit 5 items by deadline before being eligible for PC rates. PC status occurs separately for each organization, and each organization may have additional requirements for this designation.
  5. Collaborative projects are paid at the rate of the item divided by the number of contributors, unless the contributors did not work equally. In such cases of unequal work, the organization may designate a fraction/percentage for each contributor that accurately reflects the work for invoicing.
  6. While we have tried to provide detailed quantification for various items, some submitted items may carry a degree of ambiguity. The publication’s management will make categorical determinations in such instances and, if needed, consult the Coordinator of Student Media for feedback and approval.
