Child Aid is a Portland-based literacy nonprofit working to improve the quality of education in Guatemala’s poorest and most underprivileged public schools. Coaching is fundamental to Child Aid’s success in helping teachers gain the knowledge and skills needed to improve their instruction. Senior Child Aid staff members, Graciela Landa Pichiya and Jorge Sanum will share their experiences as literacy trainers working one-on-one with teachers and how Child Aid is using the principles of coaching to transform classrooms and inspire new methods of teaching, learning, and collaboration.

About Child Aid

Child Aid partners with primary teachers and schools in Guatemala to create vibrant classrooms full of literacy and learning.  Their programs focus on helping children develop the core literacy skills and habits of reading that are so critical to lifetime learning.  They stock classroom shelves with colorful, engaging books, train teachers in literacy instruction and support school programs that give students more opportunities to spend time reading and developing their skills.
