PSU is beginning a new push to prevent and resolve conflict on campus by providing more training, support and resources to faculty, staff and students. The goal is to build a campus climate where all professional and classroom interactions are fair and equitable, and any disputes are resolved quickly. We will be working over the summer and fall to inform students, faculty and staff of the range of services available and how to access them. Below are the resources already in place. These offices will take over the functions previously performed by the Ombuds Office.

For faculty and staff, Carol Gabrielli will be a first point of contact in her new post as a senior employee relations specialist in the Human Resources office and the Office of Academic Affairs. She will work directly with Cathy LaTourette, associate vice president for human relations, and Carol Mack, vice provost for academic personnel and leadership development, to evaluate and help resolve employment issues. She and the rest of the employee-relations team will train supervisors one-on-one and in groups to manage more effectively and prevent conflicts. The first stop for student-related issues should be the Office of the Dean of Student Life, a new resource for students, faculty, and staff. The office staff is trained to assess issues, provide referrals, and intervene when necessary in areas such as student conduct and academic appeals. The office's Coordination Assistance Response Education (CARE) Team addresses specific incidents and general concerns about student behavior. The office also oversees student legal and mediation services, residence life, the women's resource center, and student activities and leadership programs. (Contact:, 503-725-4422,, 433 Smith Memorial Student Union)

The University's new Office of Diversity and Inclusion, which houses both the Office of Equity and Compliance and the Office of Diversity Advocacy, provides support, information, and advice with a goal of making the campus a welcoming place for everyone. The Office of Equity & Compliance is responsible for investigating complaints of prohibited discrimination and harassment. (Contact:, 503-725-5919,, Market Center Building, 1600 SW 4th Ave, Suite 830).
