About Speech & Hearing Sciences

In Speech & Hearing Sciences, we are committed to preparing PSU students to meet the growing need for speech-language pathologists and audiologists.

Our program is designed to give you the knowledge and clinical training you need to serve children and adults with communication disorders in a range of medical and educational settings.

Our undergraduate program provides a strong foundation in speech and hearing development and disorders, along with early opportunities for clinical observation, assistantships and research.

In our speech-language pathology graduate program, clinical training is built into every term. You start in our on-campus clinic and community partner clinics in your first year and go off campus for two full-time community externships in your second year. Our job placement rate for graduate students is nearly 100 percent.

Our motto is “curiosity, collaboration and communication,” and our mission is to serve the community.  We are proud to be recognized as one of the nation’s top speech-language pathology programs by U.S. News & World Report.

What sets PSU’s Speech and Hearing Sciences apart:

  • Engaged students: Our 200 undergraduate students and 80 graduate students (20 per cohort) form a close community with active student groups and events.
  • Excellent faculty: Our team of professors and adjunct faculty is dedicated to student success, leading-edge research and evidence-based clinical services.
  • Research: Our faculty lead campus labs in areas such as swallowing, stuttering, autism and language disorders.
  • Clinical Program: We offer a full range of services for children and adults with communication challenges at our on-campus clinic. In addition, we have community-based clinics in collaboration with OHSU, school districts and skilled nursing facilities. Our faculty work closely with students to provide excellent services free of cost to our clients.
  • Partnerships: Our location in downtown Portland and tradition of strong community partnerships gives our students easy access to hands-on clinical experience. Our partners include OHSU, Legacy Health, Portland Public Schools and dozens of other school districts, hospital systems and private clinics.
