Congratulations to Kitty Noowong and Sean Oulashin, the 2018-2019 recipients of the Koerner Camera Systems Scholarships in the Portland State University School of Film! This is the fourth year that the scholarships have been awarded, and with the generous support of Koerner Camera Systems, we are able to award two $5,000 scholarships annually to Film Majors with an interest in cinematography.

Kitty Noowong:
“Attending college in America is undoubtedly a privilege, considering I was raised by a single mother in Bangkok, Thailand. I’m thankful to have the opportunity to go to college. However, the expense of school can be overwhelming and discouraging at times. Koerner Camera Systems scholarship has given me a chance to complete my degree and allow me to take film classes that I'm interested in without worrying about the extra expenses. I value this scholarship, and am working hard toward finishing my BA degree and getting my foot in the door of the film industry. Female directors who are people of color, in particular, are rarely seen behind the camera, and so my professional goal is to become a female Asian director who works to tell stories of those who are underrepresented. I am currently working at Portland State University Office of Academic Innovation, and the money that I make is going towards film projects. As a matter of fact, one of my short films has been selected as an official selection at Portland Film Festival 2018! Without the Koerner Scholarship, I would not be able to create and refine my skills.”

Sean Oulashin:
“In addition to the gratifying feeling of being supported by one of the largest camera companies, the scholarship award has helped me focus more on my studies without having to worry as much about my financial situation. In this way, I've been able to hone my creative abilities and find new ways to better express myself through film.  This scholarship has been valuable to me in that it's made me realize not only my own value as a creative individual but the value that film has to offer the world. It is such a versatile medium that still offers more to be explored, I feel, as we've only scratched the surface of what video can do, and how it can affect people worldwide. I want to make branded content for companies, brands, individuals, in order to attract new customers and grow someone's presence, primarily online. The Koerner Scholarship helps me complete my degree and graduate with knowledge that will further my pursuits and reach my fullest potential.”
