My Background

I have struggled with an unsure career path. As a youth, I volunteered with the Portland Police Bureau and was interested by the excitement of police work. I put myself through my BA in Criminal Justice at Portland State by working as an operational supervisor at UPS. Somewhere during my education, I realized that law enforcement was not what I wanted to do with my life. Upon graduation, I pivoted into a successful career as a paralegal where I could put my writing skills to use, but I still felt that I was heading down the wrong path.

My Experience at Portland State University

The Portland State MBA program has far exceeded my expectations. My classmates are both insightful and supportive of each other and because we stay with our cohort for the entire program, I am enjoying the sense of community that I didn’t get to experience as an undergraduate. The coursework and texts are engaging and the instructors are inspiring. What I find most impressive is how many opportunities the School of Business provides outside of the classroom. Between groups such as Women in Business and Net Impact, networking events, informational panels, the mentor program, and workshops, I have been able to get involved with tailoring my education and have made valuable connections with the local business community.

My Future Goals

When deeply considering my future, I realized that I wanted to work in an exciting field where I could utilize my ability to be simultaneously creative and analytical. I asked myself what all of the people that I knew with enviable careers had that I was missing and found that it was business prowess. Once armed with my Portland State MBA, I will aim for a career in marketing within an innovative industry. I finally have the sense that I am heading in the right direction and that I have found my passion.
