  • Senior ‘17
  • Born in South Korea

Gene Park is an undergraduate student at the School of Business majoring in Supply & Logistics Management and Finance. Gene grew up in South Korea and immigrated to the United States five years ago. He started his academic journey with English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes at the Portland Community College (PCC) where he received his associate degree. After having accomplished his long journey to become a PSU student, Gene started working as a Peer Advisor at the School of Business. He shares his firsthand experience in classes and provides tips about SBA system and guidelines to students.

What's your favorite thing about studying and working at the SBA?

I particularly like the diversity on campus. And I’m not referring to diverse ethnicity only. PSU has students of different age and background. I have met many students who were older than me and had already a lot of work experience. They gave me valuable advice. I also made friends with people from different countries who taught me interesting things about their culture.

What made you want to be a Peer Advisor?

I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to get involved in my school and cultivate new contacts. I also wanted to expand my social circle and build my leadership skills. Since I am a senior with a double major, I wanted to share my experience with other sophomore or junior students and offer advice.

Why should students seek express advising? What should they expect? How should they prepare?

It can be very confusing to set up an academic plan. Students may come up with technical questions about their elective courses and alternatives. Express Advising is a great way to get quick help and check whether you are on the right track or not.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I have a strong passion for Supply Chain Management. I would like to start a career at a local company where I can gain more experience in managing supplies and improving supply chain systems. Eventually, I would like to become a sourcing manager at a global company and travel the world for work.

Have a quick question or two? Drop in for Express Advising and meet with a peer advisor. Peer advisors offer firsthand experience in classes and tips about the SBA system and guidelines. They all are trained to offer academic planning and other curriculum based guidance to all students who plan to graduate with a business degree from PSU.
