Portland State University’s School of Business Administration offers an internship posting service for all employers interested in our undergraduate and graduate business students.

Since our programs have options for full-time and part-time students, many students are able to work in internship positions throughout the academic year, as well as during the summer. Internships that take place during the academic year are generally on a part-time basis, approximately 10-15 hours per week. These internships can last for only a few weeks to several months in duration. Internships that take place during the summer are typically on a full-time basis, although part-time internships are also welcome. The academic year begins in late September and ends in late June. You will receive an automated email reminding you when the internship posting is about to expire so that you will have the opportunity to renew. In your email, please be sure to include the following information:

  • A brief job description (including duties and requirements)
  • Salary and wage information
  • Hours and duration of internship
  • How to apply for the position

Please make sure to indicate whether or not the internship is for undergraduate or graduate students. However, if the School of Business feels that the internship does not meet our student’s needs, we may choose not to share it. If that is the case, you will receive an email notifying you of our decision.

Internship Requirements

All interns should be mentored, trained, and supervised as appropriate to the position. They should be doing work that is primarily developmental in nature. In other words, the internship should be a learning experience for our students.  Routine and repetitive work, such as answering phones or database entry, should comprise 25 percent or less of their time. Note: If your paid position has a larger component of routine and repetitive work, then we can list it as a student job instead of as an internship.

Unpaid interns working at “for-profit” companies will be approved on a case-by-case basis to ensure they comply with the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. The general requirements are listed below: 

  • Unpaid interns should work no more than 10 - 15 hours per week. 
  • You must require the student to show you proof that they are earning academic credit.  To earn credit in the School of Business Administration, a student must be an admitted junior, senior, or graduate student.  This is for both their protection and yours, because of insurance (health and liability) and minimum wage issues.  If students are involved in fundraising, warm or cold calling or sales, they must be paid an hourly wage and credit will not be available.  
  • After a one term training period, any continuing internship would need to convert to a paid position. 

Note: Most graduate-level internships are paid. Unpaid internships will be approved on a case-by-case basis and are generally only allowed for non-profit organizations.
