Preparing Global Professionals

Russian Flagship Program at Portland State University

Russian skills are some of the most highly sought after language skills in the United States and abroad. Get a jump start on your career by joining the Russian Flagship Program and develop professional-level fluency in Russian.

As one of only six Russian Flagship programs in the entire country, the Portland State Russian Flagship offers students the opportunity to add real international experience to any major, no matter what field they are studying.  Professional level competency in Russian can enhance your major in International Studies, Environmental Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Public Health, History, Computer Science, Anthropology, Applied Linguistics, and many others.

Joining the Russian Flagship Program

Students who haven’t studied Russian previously can join the Introductory Track of the program and take intensive Russian during the academic year.

Students who have already studied Russian can join the program at higher levels, leading to the Advanced Track of Flagship courses. Courses teach students to communicate in Russian starting with basic needs and everyday topics, and then work up to courses where students learn to converse in Russian about important current events and trends (e.g., globalization, environmental sustainability).

Students put their language knowledge to work in final projects for courses which can include making a video or oral presentations in Russian.

Study and Internship Abroad

Students complement their studies on the PSU campus with two study abroad experiences in Russian-speaking countries – the first experience takes place in summer, while the second lasts a full academic year. To help afford their education abroad, students can apply for scholarships from many sources, including the Flagship, Boren AwardsGilman Scholarship Program, and the Critical Languages Scholarship Program.

During the academic year abroad, students complete an internship in a field connected to their major or professional interests. PSU student Huell White interned with a media company and interviewed a number of political figures for a Kazakh television program.

Internship and Career Opportunities

The Russian Flagship Program’s students have opportunities to volunteer with local area organizations and connect with the Portland metro area’s growing Russian language population. Students have worked with the Russian Dual Language Immersion Program in Portland Public Schools and the Portland Police Department in outreach to the Slavic community. Students interested in a career in the U.S. armed forces who participate in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) are eligible for special scholarships.

Russian Flagship program graduates go on to work in education, non-governmental organizations, international businesses here and abroad. Many work in government, especially, for the State Department and the Department of Defense. Read more about our alumni.
