Meet Assistant Professor Rana Yaghmaian

Rana Yaghmaian, PhD, CRC, is an assistant professor of counselor education and the clinical rehabilitation counseling program coordinator at Portland State University. She completed both her master’s and doctorate degrees in rehabilitation psychology at the University of Wisconsin Madison and completed her bachelor’s degree in political science at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.

Dr. Yaghmaian takes a special interest in exploring the unique experiences of women and other minorities with disabilities. Her dissertation research explored the biopsychosocial predictors of subjective well-being in women with fibromyalgia through the lens of feminist disability theory. Beyond her research endeavors, she is committed to advancing social justice pedagogy in counselor education. Recently, she developed the History, Identity, Privilege, Action (HIPA) approach for integrating intersectionality into rehabilitation counselor education, which reflects her dedication to the development of multicultural counseling competencies in emerging counselors.
