Research Administrator of the Year Award

Illustration, people and gearsThe Research Administrator Award recognizes the outstanding contributions of a research administration professional to the research enterprise at Portland State University. The recipient of this honor will receive an award and a $1,500 taxable honorarium, to be presented at PSU’s annual Research Awards event (May 8, 2020), which is organized and hosted by RGS to celebrate awardees and their work. 

 

Research administration is a broad field that includes support provided to research at any stage of the sponsored project lifecycle, from the identification of funding opportunities to intellectual property management. Research administration responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Identifying research funding opportunities
  • Participating in proposal development, internal review processes, and submission to a funding agency
  • Negotiating terms and conditions of awards and participating in the administration of an award
  • Assisting with contract modifications, extensions, progress reports, or effort certification
  • Administration of a research account, centrally or departmentally, from account set-up to account management to close-out
  • Providing support in the form of compliance review for export controls, animal use, human subject research, biosafety matters, etc.
  • Managing invention disclosures and intellectual property generated by sponsored research

Eligibility Criteria

  • At least .50FTE 
  • Employed in a research administration role at PSU for at least one year
  • Nominations will be accepted from anyone within the PSU community, and administrators may nominate themselves

Selection Criteria

Qualified nominees will have advanced and enhanced research administration at the University, demonstrating positive impacts within their own unit and beyond. Nomination letters should address the quality of the nominee’s professional interactions with employees, faculty, and students at the University and with groups outside the University (such as research sponsors, local organizations, and government representatives), as appropriate to their work responsibilities. Nomination letters should reflect upon the nominee’s level of professionalism, dedication, and service. No more than one awardee will ordinarily be named each year. The review committee may forego naming an awardee in any given year. 

Required Nomination Materials

Completed nomination packets must include:

  • A one-page nomination letter describing the nominee’s contributions to their unit and to the University, as well as any additional information for the review committee
  • The nominee’s current resume, demonstrating professional growth in research administration
  • One (1) letter of support from the nominee’s current or recent supervisor, affirming the nominee’s contributions to research administration at PSU
  • Up to two (2) additional letters of support from others on campus (PIs, supervisors, colleagues, etc.) attesting to the nominee’s impact on research administration at PSU

Submission Deadlines 

  • To nominate an individual, please email research@pdx.edu with your nominee's name no later than January 23, 2020 (include “Research Administrator of the Year Award Nomination” in the subject line). 
  • Submit all nomination materials (resume and letters), also to research@pdx.edu, by Wednesday, February 12, 2020. Include "Research Administrator of the Year Award Nomination" and the nominee's last name in the subject line. All completed nominations received by February 12, 2020 will be eligible for review. 
  • A committee will review all nominations according to the award criteria and in partnership with the Vice President for Research & Graduate Studies, who will select the award recipient.
  • The award recipient will be notified in February and celebrated at PSU’s annual Research Awards event on May 8, 2020.
