Business Accelerator Company Profile: APDM

APDM, a PSU Business Accelerator company-in-residence was founded in 2007 by James McNames, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at PSU, and associates Mateo Aboy and Andrew Greenberg. The company’s mission is to “develop and commercialize best-in-class solutions for quantifying human movement with wearable monitors.” To achieve that purpose, APDM, which stands for Ambulatory Parkinson’s Disease Monitoring, created the world’s most advanced movement monitors, and the first wearable sensor-based gait and balance assessment suite, the Mobility Lab.

When the company launched, APDM’s technology was developed to meet the technological needs of researchers studying Ambulatory Parkinson’s Disease, with the goal of providing a tool for early intervention. Today, researchers, trainers, and athletes around the world are using APDM’s wearable sensors, with more than 25,000 subjects analyzed. During the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, US diving and gymnastics teams trained using APDM’s Opal wearable sensors.

To date, APDM has received investments and grant funding totaling more than $14M and was awarded the 2016 Small Business Innovation Award from the Portland Business Journal. Hiring experts in embedded systems, signal processing, physical therapy, and web-based data management, the tech company has grown to over twenty employees.

APDM is a frequent collaborator with researchers and clinicians at Oregon Health and Science University, and researchers and engineers at Portland State University and the Oregon Institute of Technology.

Wearable technologies are one of the next big industries. We feel like we’re one of the top companies leading innovations in the field.”

Keeping close ties with PSU, APDM has opened its doors for internships and job opportunities for engineering students from PSU’s Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science. Over half of the company’s employees are PSU graduates with computer science, electrical engineering, and systems engineering degrees.
