Grant Writing Support Program

Grant Writing Program

Grant writing support available

To support the development of large, collaborative proposals, RGS will offer funding for a grant writer or other professional assistance related to proposal development. The goal is to strengthen grant proposals to federal sponsors, scholarly societies, and academic associations. Professional assistance can be useful in crafting a proposal that is clear and compelling for its target audience and that addresses the criteria outlined in the grant program guidelines. Services could include writing, editing, proofreading, and project management, as well as performing initial reviews of the proposal. Support is also available to convene multiple faculty across campus to foster collaboration on opportunities.

Eligibility criteria

To qualify for assistance, a proposal must meet all of the following three criteria:

  1. Principal Investigators (PIs) must be PSU faculty
  2. Multiple departments, colleges, or universities must be involved
  3. Grant writing services for each request cannot exceed $10,000

Funds are limited. The Associate Vice President for Research & Graduate Studies will lead the selection based upon the following criteria and scoring rubric:

  • Large-scale, collaborative research proposals seeking over $3M in funding (25 pts)
  • Demonstrated potential to establish or grow a high-impact research program (20 pts)
  • Engagement of undergraduates and underrepresented groups in research (15 pts)
  • Maximum indirect costs (full federal F&A rate preferred) (15 pts)
  • Led by tenured or tenure-track PSU faculty (10 pts)
  • Timeline allows for planning well in advance of the proposal deadline (10 pts)
  • Pursuing a limited submission opportunity (5 pts)
Application requirements

To apply, teams must submit the following materials to Kelly Clifton, Interim Associate Vice President for Research, via email to research@pdx.edu (please include “grant writing support 2019” in the subject line):

  1. A one-page description of the proposal, including a proposal development timeline and a link to the funding solicitation
  2. A letter of support from the PIs’ Dean(s)
  3. A brief statement describing how securing this funding would advance PSU’s research enterprise
  4. A budget justification

Completed applications must be submitted by Friday, December 6, 2019 to be considered for this initial opportunity. RGS will issue quarterly calls for grant writing support proposals, starting in FY21.

Once awarded, PIs must work with their departments to find an appropriate grant writer and contract with them in compliance with PSU’s Human Resources policies and procedures and all applicable state and federal laws.
