Dr. Masami Nishishiba, Associate Director of the Center for Public Service, was recently awarded a 2013 President's Diversity Award.

"Masami Nishishiba, Assistant Professor of Public Administration and Assistant Director for the Center for Public Service is a constant model and advocate in helping PSU meet its diversity goals.  She continually demonstrates her deep commitment to diversity and inclusion, and the development and enhancement of cultural competence at our University and well beyond its borders.  At PSU, Dr. Nishishiba teaches courses in Diversity including “Enhancing Diversity in the Workplace” which is offered to Masters in Public Administration students, and co-teaches Public Leadership & Cultural Competence in the Executive Masters of Public Administration program.  In these classes she is skillful in her ability to integrate academic and experiential learning whereby PSU students complete the course with a comprehensive understanding about the value and meaning of diversity, as well as a new personal self-awareness about their bias and behavior.  In addition, Dr. Nishishiba has recently led the International Field Experience for the EMPA program. In this capacity she instructs and guides graduate students to experience first-hand public service processes in foreign environments.  She is extremely effective in teaching about and modeling the cultural competence needed to interact professionally and respectfully when imbedded in a place that is very culturally different than the U.S."
