Mentoring workshop

Mentoring Academy Workshop Series

The Fostering Mentoring Acumen Workshop series offers evidence-based training for mentors of research trainees across disciplines at different career stages, including undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty. The training is designed to help mentors develop skills for engaging in productive, culturally responsive, research mentoring relationships that optimize the success of both mentors and mentees.

Designed as a two-part series, each 4-hour session introduces new content to support participants' development as mentors. Participants are encouraged but not required to attend both workshop sessions. Each session will be facilitated by Portland State faculty who have been trained in evidence-based mentoring methods.

Session One: Entering the Mentoring Relationship

This workshop (for faculty members and postdocs only) will accelerate the process of becoming an effective research mentor by providing mentors with an intellectual framework, an opportunity to experiment with various methods, and a forum in which to solve mentoring dilemmas with the help of their peers. By the end of the training, mentors will have articulated their personal style and philosophy of mentoring and have a toolbox of strategies they can use when faced with difficult mentoring situations.
