Are you a part of a student organization, department or team at PSU? Looking for a team building or bonding activity where you can have fun and be healthy? Campus Rec and Student Activities and Leadership Programs have opportunities for you and your team to engage in service learning, explore the outdoors or try a new workout or activity.

What we offer:

Serve Your City Days

The Student Community Engagement Center designed Serve Your City Days as a way to provide the support and set up opportunities for you and your group to get involved in service here at Portland State and in the broader Portland community.

Opportunities: We set up service experiences ranging from 2 hours to all day.  Because we work closely with dozens of community partners, we can tailor the service experience to meet your group goals, but also a real community need!

Examples of on-campus service experiences:

  • Projects for the Re-Use Room
  • Work in the gardens on campus
  • Projects for the ASPSU Food Pantry

Examples of off-campus service experiences:

  • Classroom aids for a day in the Kindergarten classes PSU sponsors at Alder Elementary School
  • Habitat for Humanity build day
  • Invasive species removal at Forest Park

Price: Free! There is a limited amount of funding available for travel for student Serve Your City days.  Food will not be provided for these service opportunities.

Fitness On-the-Go

Fitness On-the-Go aims to fill a growing need exhibited by the PSU community to access private fitness classes and events for a specific group.  With very limited open facility space within the Rec Center, Fitness On-the-Go allows for instructors to travel to various spaces across campus and teach Group X classes with ease.  This program may also eliminate barriers to Group X participation by bringing Group X classes to a convenient location with familiar faces. Fitness On-the-Go is a great option for group team building, stress management, exercise, and fun!

Opportunities: Class types include: Power Vinyasa Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Bootcamp, Zumba, and HIIT.  Special requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis and will be accommodated if possible.  Groups must coordinate their own space reservation on campus but suggested locations and reservation instructions can be provided upon request.

Price: $20/class (classes can be 30-60 mins and cost is the same for all group sizes and class lengths)

To get started: Please submit a Fitness On-the-Go Form, and the Group X Student Coordinator will get back to you within two business days. Note: A minimum of two weeks notice is required.

Custom Outdoor Program Trips

Description: The Outdoor Program helps PSU students access and enjoy the outdoors. One of the primary ways the Outdoor Program has done this is through outdoor trips led by student trip leaders at affordable prices. A trip of this nature allows members of a club, program, or group to have an experience in common that helps bring them together.

Opportunities: The Outdoor Program has a variety of options to choose from depending on the size of the group, the length of trip requested, and the budget you have available. Trip cost includes all the necessary equipment, experienced trip leaders, and transportation. Some examples include:

  • Small group (up to 9 people), one day: Standup paddling, whitewater rafting, rock climbing
  • Large group (up to 18 people), one day: day hikes, snowshoeing
  • Multi-day trips: backpacking, sea kayaking, coastal camping, etc.

To get started: Please contact Chris Bullard ( or Ann Marie Hingley ( to get more information. Due to the complexities of planning and staffing outdoor trips, the only way to guarantee availability is to set up the trip by Week 5 of the term prior to when you want the trip.

Rec Center Space Reservation

Space Reservations in the Student Rec Center are available to groups recognized by Portland State University. Reserving space allows you to participate in the activity of your choice that is intended to take place on a gym court or in a multi-purpose studio type space. The Gymnasium court is available for a one-time event while the multi-purpose room can reserved on a reoccurring basis through the end of the current term. This is a great way for student organizations to practice for upcoming performances or for a game with your university recognized group.

Opportunities: Activities include: court sports such as basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, badminton and more. Also available are multi-purpose rooms for dance practice.

Price: Free! As long as everyone in your university group has a membership to the Rec Center.
