Campus Rec for a Cause

Campus Rec for a Cause is a department-wide initiative that combines Campus Rec’s mission of promoting health and wellness with its commitment to serving the community. Campus Rec for a Cause participants engage in community service while being physically active. Events are open to the entire campus, including students, faculty and staff. The program supports the Campus and Community Engagement Center and other campus partners.

Zumbathon

Thursday | 4/20/2017 

Join Campus Rec and the Women’s Resource Center during Sexual Assault Awareness Month for PSU’s second annual Zumbathon! Give back to your community while dancing your cares away. There will be multiple instructors leading participants through a variety of musical genres and dance styles. A $5 suggested donation helps the WRC provide safe shelter for women fleeing domestic violence. Join the party for five minutes or the full two hours! Open to the entire PSU community and up to three accompanied guests (guest fee waived for this special event). Valid Portland State ID or Alumni Association card required for admission. Guests are required to have a government issued photo ID.

Cascade Classic Goallboal Tournament

Friday - Sunday | 2/10 - 2/12/2017
This is our big community service project and we will provide transportation to and from PSU for campus rec members that are over 18. This tournament host teams from around the U.S. and Canada and will have several of both the Women and Men's U.S. and Canadian Paralympians competing over the weekend. You will learn about a unique sport designed for the blind that is fast pace, high energy and very physical. Those volunteering for a whole shift will be fed and receive a tournament shirt.

Tillamook Estuaries Service Trip

 

Saturday | 10/8/2016
Join the Outdoor Program, The Nature Conservancy, and Tillamook Estuaries Partnership for a day of service-learning fun! Most of our day will be spent repotting natives plants that will be used in restoration efforts in nearby wetlands. After our work is complete, we'll have some time to explore the area.

Dance-A-Thon for Breast Cancer Awareness

Most people agree that exercise is good for you; did you know that regular exercise can reduce the risk of developing Breast Cancer? Come join us for a dance-a-thon in the MAC Court on the third floor of The Rec Center, to support breast cancer awareness month and let's get active! Bring a pink costume if you wish.

Giant Volleyball

Thursday, April 21, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. | Courts 

Campus Rec is hosting Giant Volleyball in support of Take Back The Night, an international effort to combat sexual violence. Play volleyball with an oversize ball and learn about Portland State’s Take Back The Night event on Tuesday, April 26. Open to the entire PSU community – valid Portland State ID or Alumni Association card required for admission. Free; no registration required.

Service Trip SOLVE
Saturday, April 23, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.

The Outdoor Program led a day to plant native plants, build some protective plant cages (those darn beavers!) and learn some basic plant identification skills. They worked with SOLVE, a state-wide non-profit organization that takes action every day to keep Oregon clean and green. The first half of the day they planted, mulched and built at their Beavercreek location. The second half of the day they hiked through the area to view all the progress at this site, as well as learned about the native flora in the area.
 

Great Toy Drive

Monday, November 16 - Tuesday, December 8

Thank you to those who participated. We collected 80 toys!

Campus Rec is partnering with the KGW Great Toy Drive to collect toys for children who are less fortunate. For more than 30 years, the KGW Great Toy Drive has provided hundreds of thousands of toys to our community’s less fortunate families in Oregon and Southwest Washington. Toys are distributed with the help of more than 100 local nonprofit organizations and hundreds of dedicated volunteers.

Drop new, unwrapped toys off at the Rec Sports Office, ASRC 236, just beyond Member Services on the right. 

On December 8 join us as we walk the toys to a nearby toy collection point.

Columbia Slough Service & Paddling Trip
Saturday, October 17, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Outdoor Program led a day of community service, giving back to the lifeline of the Northwest: the Columbia River. Participants spent the first half of the day restoring the watershed and improving the habitat. Afterward, they paddled around on sea kayaks, exploring the environment in which they worked.

Cascade Classic Goalball Tournament

Friday-Sunday, Feb. 12-14 | Washington State School for the Blind, Vancouver, Wash.
Fri: 1 p.m.-10 p.m., Sat: 7:10 a.m. - 10 p.m., Sun: 7:10 a.m. -1 p.m.

Volunteers needed! Elite American and Canadian goalball athletes are competing, and we're recruiting a volunteer support team. Learn about this unique sport designed for the blind, and help run the tournament. Various shifts are available and transportation is provided to members 18+. Those who complete their whole shift earn free food and a tournament t-shirt.

Tryon Creek Service Trip

Saturday, Feb. 13, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Join the Outdoor Program and Friends of Tryon Creek for a day of service-learning fun! Spend half the day under the 658-acre lush second-growth forest -- full of woodpeckers, squirrels, owlets, beavers, wildflowers and gigantic Douglas-fir -- while removing English Ivy, a nasty invasive in the area. After getting your hands dirty, spend the second half of the day exploring the area.

Community Cleanup Walks

Take a study or work break and help beautify PSU. Walk, clean up trash, enjoy the outdoors and make an immediate difference. All walks leave at noon from the ASRC entrance near Cafe Yumm. No registration required.
