Modernism Research Group

The Modernism Group seeks to gather Modernism scholars for discussion and research support. “Modernism” refers to the cultural period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We are primarily reading theory to do with the construction of the idea of the “modern.” We seek to establish a canon of primary texts and to read important critical work of the 20th- and 21-st centuries. We read philosophy and literary and cultural theory and criticism to stay abreast of current scholarly trends and to nourish our own work. An important aspect of this group is sharing ideas and developing our knowledge and understanding of this field together. Any literary and cultural modernism scholars are welcome. Interested participants please contact Celia Carlson at:

This group is a Research Group associated with the Portland Center for Public Humanities.
