As part of International Education Week 2019, join us in exploring the Middle East Collection housed in PSU’s Special Collections! During this event, we will learn about newly-acquired rare books and objects from the Middle East, including a tavan göbeği (ceiling navel) from Turkey and Persian leather goods from the late nineteenth-century used to carry hookah parts on the pilgrimage to Mecca. Faculty, students, and researchers are encouraged to attend to learn how to access and use these materials for research.

The collection features a printing of the first book set in Arabic type at Oxford (by the university’s first chair of Arabic), an edition of the Psalms in Arabic and Latin printed in France in 1614, and several examples of important works in printed Arabic written by Middle Eastern historians from the medieval era to the 18th century. Other books include maps, flora and fauna, and illustrations of agriculture and cultural exchange.

Co-Sponsored by the Middle East Studies Center and PSU Special Collections and the Tarbell Family Foundation
