Opera Appreciation with Carl Halvorson
The Birth of the Baroque

Tuesday, February 25 | 4:00 - 6:00 PM
Lincoln Hall 225
Free and open to the public

Following the birth of opera by the Florentine Camerata in the 1580s, the nascent art form grew spectacularly in popularity and complexity and featured richer harmonic language and orchestral color, clearer musical structures, greater ornamentation, and the blockbuster appeal of new classes of brilliant singers like the castrati.  Vivaldi’s Bajazet will be performed by Portland Opera at the end of March, starring PSU voice faculty member Daniel Mobbs.

The PSU School of Music and Theater presents Carl Halvorson in a series of lectures designed to engage those who are curious about opera and want to learn more, as well as passionate opera lovers. We will explore the rich history of the art form. The series features plenty of music spanning over 500 years, including definitive recordings and live performances by PSU students, faculty and guest artists. Each session will offer background and insight on current local presentations and productions. Free and open to the public.
