Scholarship of Teaching & Learning Institute
Thursday, December 14, 2017 - 9:00am to Thursday, December 14, 2017 - 3:00pm

Join us for a two day series on December 14th and 15th from 9:00am-3:00pm. RSVP now.

When you ask, “How can I improve classroom discussions?” or “ Why did the students do so poorly on Question #3 in my last exam?”, you are studying your teaching. This is scholarly teaching, that is, reflecting on your practice and, then, thinking about ways to improve your teaching.

Scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL) expands on this natural reflective practice of scholarly teaching by adding some additional elements: designing and conducting a study of some aspect of your teaching practice and, then, identifying ways to share the results with your peers at conferences or in a publication.

The Office of Academic Innovation is sponsoring an Institute on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for two days in December where you can design a scholarship of teaching and learning project in your classroom. The purpose of this institute is for faculty to work together to identify a teaching problem or curiosity, and, then, design a study for implementation in Winter or Spring classes. Over the Institute we will seek to disentangle the challenges of conducting research in your classroom and show you how to design and implement a SOTL classroom research project.

The Institute will cover essential content:
+ Identifying teaching challenges or curiosities in your classroom
+analyzing models for doing SOTL projects in the research literature
+writing an Institutional Review Board (IRB) Proposal for a SOTL project

We expect everyone will leave the Institute with the design of a study for their classroom in the winter or spring term.

Lunch will be served.

RSVP for this event.
